Monkeypox Prevention Measures You Should Know In Your Condo

Aug 03, 2022

As a resident of a condo, it's important to know the risk of monkeypox and what preventive measures you can take to reduce the chances of contracting the virus. This post will discuss what monkeypox is, how you can be infected, and some steps to protect yourself from the virus. We'll also provide helpful resources for those who want more information about monkeypox.

What Is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral infection spread through contact with infected fluids or tissues of infected animals. The Monkeypox virus can survive for up to two (2) hours on surfaces and objects. It can also survive in the air for up to 24 hours.

Symptoms of Monkeypox

The first symptoms of monkeypox may include fever or a rash. These symptoms generally appear two to three weeks after exposure to the virus. After this initial period, the illness usually progresses rapidly and appears as a generalized rash over the entire body within five days of infection. The rash is usually reddish-purple, with blisters and small bumps.

The symptoms of monkeypox also include headache, back pain, nausea, vomiting, and blisters that look like red pimples. The rash begins as flat red spots before developing into raised bumps known as vesicles (small fluid-filled blisters). The blisters may also become filled with pus as they develop.

In some cases, people may develop a serious respiratory illness called monkey lymphadenitis (LPD). This condition causes swelling and inflammation of the lymph nodes in your neck (or "jaw") and armpits. People with LPD may experience fever, cough, and sore throat.

When these symptoms appear, it's essential to see your doctor as soon as possible to prevent complications from the disease.

How Does Monkeypox Spread?

According to the World Health Organization, there are three ways monkeypox can be spread:

Person-to-person transmission

Monkeypox virus can be transmitted or transferred from one person to another when they are in close physical contact for a long period of time.

Animal-to-human transmission

Monkeypox can be transmitted from infected monkeys or other primates to humans. This is rare and usually occurs when people come into direct contact with infected animals or monkeys that have died from the disease.

Contact with contaminated surfaces

The Monkeypox virus can also be passed on through contaminated surfaces, such as bedding, clothing, and towels used by an infected person or animal.

How Do People Get Infected With Monkeypox?

People get monkeypox by contacting an infected animal, human being, or object.

The virus spreads quickly through direct contact with infected saliva or blood and can be passed from one person to another through coughing and sneezing. People who work closely with monkeys are at greater risk of getting infected than those who do not work closely with monkeys because they may come in contact with more monkey fluids than non-working professionals like doctors or veterinarians who do not come into contact with monkeys.

This is called contact transmission of monkeypox. For instance, if you have a close relative who has had monkeypox and then touches someone else's body without washing their hands, they could pass on the disease to that person. Or if you go hiking with friends exposed to monkeypox, you could get it from them too!

Monkeypox Prevention Measures To Do In Your Condo Community

Monkeypox is a serious disease, and you want to ensure that you or your family stays safe in your condo. Here are some practical steps you can take to prevent monkeypox:

  • Wash your hands as often as possible with soap and warm water for at least 20-30 seconds, until the water runs clear, whichever comes first. This can help prevent infection from spreading.
  • The best way to avoid and prevent monkeypox is by avoiding contact with monkeys and other animals known to carry the virus. If you must come into contact with them, wear gloves and wash your hands after handling them.
  • Do not touch any open wounds or sores on yourself or others. If you come in contact with an open wound or sore, wash your hands immediately and thoroughly with soap and water, then cover the area with a bandage to prevent exposure to other people.
  • Avoid sharing personal items with others exposed to monkeypox and keep these items clean and dry.
  • When you're sick, stay in your condo. The best way to avoid monkeypox is by staying in your condo for at least 21 days after being diagnosed with the disease.
  • Avoid those who are ill with symptoms of monkeypox.
  • Use hand sanitizer with alcohol, or wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid animal contact at all times, including petting zoos and zoos with animals on display, as these places can spread disease between animals too easily!
  • Avoid making close physical contact at the office, such as handshakes or embraces.
  • Clear the surfaces that get a lot of use.

Potential Risks of Monkey Pox

If you have had close, personal contact with someone identified as having monkeypox, either positively or negatively, you are at risk. This includes contacting any items like beds, towels, or clothing exposed to the fluid in the lesions. Contact with any bodily fluids belonging to an infected individual also coun

Treatment for Monkeypox

Most people who have monkeypox have modest symptoms and don't need any special treatments. Monkeypox treatment continues to be supportive and symptom-focused (e.g., fever control, hydration support, treat secondary infections). In human cases of monkeypox, no specific antiviral therapies have been shown to be successful.

In severe human monkeypox cases, the antivirals cidofovir, brindofovir, and tecovirimat may be considered based on individual circumstances and in vitro and/or animal model testing. If necessary, the antiviral tecovirimat may be used "off-label" to treat monkeypox, albeit this would depend on the circumstances.
