What Awaits to Loakan Baguio Airport Routes

Nov 12, 2022

Baguio, known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines, is the best place to travel if you want to escape the tropical heat that permeates most of the country's cities and experience change with a chilly environment. Even on the warmest days of the year, the city seldom sees temperatures rise over 26°C; you'll genuinely feel as though you're living in another country. Nonetheless, excluding the cold environment, the city has a lot more to offer—from the lovely parks and scenery and numerous activities to specialty foods and souvenirs. You will also be in for a treat with the abundance of greenery, lovely flowers, and luscious vegetation as you arrive in the "City of Pines," as they call it. These are just a few factors that have made Baguio grow in popularity among tourists and locals.

Burnham Park, Mines View Park, the Botanical Garden, Camp John Hay, the Strawberry Farms at La Trinidad, and the Baguio Cathedral are a few of the city's well-known attractions. You can choose to spend time in nature, ride a bike or boat, shop till you drop in each of its various locations, savor the glory of authentic Filipino culture, or even try the famous strawberry taho! There's no other way or shortcut but to explore Baguio to find out what it offers and why both local and foreign tourists go out of their way to visit this famous city in the Philippines.

Tourism is one of Baguio's greatest strengths and most valuable businesses, yet it also has drawbacks. The Baguio airport, which is open and accessible to both domestic and international travelers, is a major contributor to the city's tourism sector, but it has grown too crowded to take any more passengers.

Baguio City's Loakan Airport opening is to be expected by the end of 2022, according to a statement made by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on October 5. The country's aviation authorities have spoken with Philippine Airlines (PAL), Baguio city officials, and its tourism office about resuming Loakan Airport flights.

Pilots have been facing major difficulties at Loakan Airport, particularly while landing, because of the runway's short length, frequent low visibility, and deep ravines at each end. According to the Baguio City government website, the Loakan Airport has been shut down for commercial operations due to reported difficulties with airplane landings during bad weather. So, is Loakan Airport operational? The short answer is that at this time, the Loakan Airport flights only allow for services that are chartered and those of the military that are on demand. But overall, is Loakan Airport operational? Soon.

Additionally, CAAP stated that it is setting aside funds for the required instrument landing system (ILS) upgrade, 100-meter runway extension, rehabilitation of the passenger terminal building, and drainage work in order to equip Loakan Airport's opening adequately.

In December of this year, Loakan airport 2022 will start flying commercial flights once more and add new routes to cover Visayas and Mindanao. Mayor of Baguio City Benjamin Magalong said that while the majority of tourists come from Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and the Ilocos Region, the city wants to attract a wider variety of tourists. PAL suggested that flights be opened from Baguio to Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, and other locations in the Visayas and Mindanao to encourage domestic and foreign tourists to visit Baguio City.

Furthermore, the city hopes to persuade "high-end" travelers to make Baguio City their top choice, which would help the city's economy and tourism industry recover from the pandemic. The anticipated reopening of Loakan airport in 2022, specifically this December, will undoubtedly increase tourism and make the city once again one of the most popular travel destinations, especially given the chilly weather and Christmas getaway events.
