What is NGO (Non-Governmental Organizations)? | Condo Tips

Jan 04, 2022

According to the January 2021 estimate of the World Bank, there is an estimate of 124 million people of additional poor globally with around 60% of whom are from South Asia. The Philippines with its fluctuating economic growth is one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia. It still has several poor communities despite the number of middle-income classes in the country. Unemployment and birth rate are one of the major factors to consider why most Filipinos belong to the urban poor. Many families in Metro Manila each day struggles with at best one meal, and at worst nothing at all.

As the national and local government continue their initiatives to decrease the poverty rate, COVID 19 significantly hit the country’s economic status. The success of curbing poverty was challenged not just in the country but across the globe.

Today, when most people hear “Voluntary Organization” or “NGO,” they think of it as a group of people that aims to improve the lives of people in need, and/or marginalized groups in one way or another. NGOs can be found locally, nationally, and internationally. This type of organization serves as additional help aside from the programs and funds from the government. The charitable activities of NGOs differ in scope and goals in terms of local, national, or international level; but all of them play a crucial role in the development sector.

Classifications of NGO

Advocacy NGO

The main purpose of an Advocacy NGO is to promote a specific cause. It makes efforts to raise awareness and knowledge by doing various activities not limited to lobbying, press work, information dissemination, research for enriched knowledge based on indigenous peoples’ rights, policy advocacy, and activist events. One good example is an organization that mainly advocates human rights, The Philippine Task Force for Indigenous Peoples’. They are working to advance the rights of indigenous peoples in the country promoting a society that defends and acknowledges indigenous peoples’ rights and upholds their self-determined development. They also work to ensure indigenous peoples’ rights to their ancestral lands and resources to ensure their food security.

Operational NGO

The main purpose of an operational NGO is to design and implement development-related projects. They must mobilize resources in the form of financial donations, materials, and volunteer labor to sustain their projects and programs. These NGOs usually possess a headquarters and field staff. Their scope can be national, international, or even community-based.

One popular example is the International Red Cross. One of the largest humanitarian networks internationally. This organization provides protection and assistance to people affected by disasters and conflicts.

Another example that is locally based in Villar SIPAG (Social Institute for Poverty Alleviation and Governance). A non-stock, non-profit organization was established in 1995. Since its establishment, the organization has initiated, implemented, and supported various projects aimed at improving the quality of life of the people. These include the poor and underprivileged. Their programs and advocacies have expanded over the years from livelihood, health, education, culture and the arts, religious grants, and even environmental programs.

Villar SIPAG is headed by the CEO of the Vista Land properties, Manuel Villar. Vista Land known for being one of the Philippines' top-tier condominium builders, has catered to the demands of young professionals, students, new families, and businessmen in terms of convenience, security, comfort, and access to practically everything they require in their daily lives. Developing high-end leisure condominium buildings with hotel amenities and services, allowing residents to live comfortably in the heart of the city. Manuel Villar together with his group of companies with expertise in residential construction has not just provided ready occupancy condos for the middle and high-class people but also pabahay programs for the underprivileged. Giving these people the chance to own a house and lot at an affordable and very reasonable price.

Overall, non-governmental organizations function to build support for a certain cause whether it is economic, political, or social. All of them rely purely on grants, loans, membership dues, private donations, and sales of goods and services they could provide since these non-governmental organizations are nonprofit organizations. They are also able to get funding from government organizations without losing their NGO status. These funds cover funding projects, operations, salaries, and other overhead costs.

As for the Philippines, many families in Metro Manila still belong in the urban poor sector. This explains the importance of non-government organizations in the Philippines that aims to work closely with the marginalized to address this issue. Though there are thousands of NGOs, the beneficiaries are continuously growing too. Not everyone can be given an opportunity to live a better life. NGOs can only do so much. They can’t provide everything one must need, but to bring a glimmer of light can bring a change, an opportunity, a chance for a much better life. These organizations are working toward a common vision to promote social change on a broad scale.
